Things to do after installing ubuntu13.04 (for starters)

If you’ve just installed ubuntu13.04 and don’t know what to do next???

don’t worry as i’m here to guide you on your way……….

At the beginning,I was also lost and had to search everywhere for suggestions. so i have compiled some important tweaks and software that are essential for most of us…….

here are few apps and tweaks with necessary installing instructions for you:

1.Tweak tools:

Gnome Tweak Tool is well-known powerful tweak tool, With this tool you can manage your Ubuntu environment like: Change theme, icons, fonts, cursor and so on options.

>>sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

Unity Tweak Tool is a configuration tool for the Unity Desktop, providing users access to features and configuration options not (obviously) accessible, and brings them all together in a polished & easy-to-use interface.

>>sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool

3.Installing skype:
for 32 bit:
>>wget -O skype-NoobsLab.deb http://download.skype.
com/linux/skype-ubuntu-lucid_4.2.0.11-1_i386.deb
>>sudo dpkg -i skype-NoobsLab.deb
>>sudo apt-get -f install;rm skype-NoobsLab.deb
for 64 bit:
>>sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
>>sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
>>sudo apt-get update
>>wget -O skype-NoobsLab.deb http://download.skype.
com/linux/skype-ubuntu-lucid_4.2.0.11-1_i386.deb
>>sudo dpkg -i skype-NoobsLab.deb
>>sudo apt-get -f install;rm skype-NoobsLab.deb

2.Enable hibernate option:

Ubuntu has disabled hibernate option, So here is tweak to enable hibernate

Open Terminal and enter following command:

>>sudo gedit /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/hibernate.pkla

copy and paste the following code in file:

[Re-enable Hibernate]
Identity=unix-user:*
Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
ResultActive=yes

Save file and Exit, then Restart and check.

4.Install gimp:
I think GIMP is an essential image editing tool for everyone.
>>sudo apt-get install gimp

5.Install restricted extras:

There are some Restricted extras in Ubuntu which can’t be install while installation of Ubuntu by default but you can install theseRestricted extras by yourself. Restricted mp3 playback and decoding,support for various formats, fonts, java, flash plugin, lame, dvd playback.

>>sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

6.Update Repositories:
last but not the least……don’t forget to update the repositories in certain interval of time
After you install Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, the first thing you need to do for your Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail is to update repositories and make sure you have the latest updates
>>sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

other necessary apps like vlc,chromium,etc are also easily available on the ubuntu software centre.
